Part Time Lay Minister W2

by Dean Ranes
(Jamesport, MO)

I am a part time lay minister, ever other week at a very small church. I receive a small amount for each service, no housing, no insurance, no gas or mileage allowance, only the amount for each Sunday's services. I have now been told the church should give W2 for my services. It has never been done previously, and the church treasurer does not know the requirements. Do I need the W2?

Pastor is Usually Considered an Employee of Church
by: Vickey

I second Sandi's post:-)

See this page for more information on determining if you are an employee of the church:
Employee or Not

Keep in mind that most of the time...the pastor is considered an employee of their church by the IRS.

the short answer is yes, you are an employee... you might want to start your research here https://www.freechurchaccounting.com/example-of-pastors-W-2.html
and IRS pub 15 series

hope this helps,
Prayers
