Gifts to Pastor and Wife and Wife is on the Payroll

Our Church is used througout the year as a conduit/Personal Bank for Monetary gifts that are given to the Pastor and his wife for Anniversary, Just because, Birthday's and Christmas. Example: The women were asked to remain after service; and were solicited for a Donation of $20.00 per woman to purchase an outfit for the Pastor's wife for Anniversay. 58 people committed, that is $1160.00. They will then give the money to her once collected. The Pastor's wife is also on the Payroll of the church.

it would be added to income on W-2. Also be careful as the IRS could count it as "private benefit or inurment" and you could lose your tax exempt status. It is better to have people give directly to individuals as it is also not a tax deduction for them.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
