Donating Rental Expense to my pastor

by Renee Webb

Can I provide housing to my pastor in a home I am still paying the mortgage on, but it is not my primary residence.

Would I first donate the payment to the church? How will I know that the donation was used for the Pastor's housing? Is it possible at all? Is it tax deductible?

Donating house for pastor to live in
by: Lewis in NC

Allow the pastor to use the house to live in and expect a letter from the church acknowledging your noncash gift for your income tax filing purposes. Suggest to the church (prior to all this happening) for the church to approve a housing allowance for the pastor for the fair market rental value of your donated house along with any other projected housing expenses as foreseen by your pastor. A properly planned housing allowance would save on the pastor's income tax calculation at tax time.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
