does church have to 1099 a missionary

by Jeff

our church wants to send a gift of money to two men in South Africa. One man is South African the other American. We are under the impression if we send them money we would have to 1099 them. Neither one works for our church. Does the money have to be shown in anyway for the IRS?

If you send them $600 or more you must have a w-9 and send them a 1099.

1099's for Non-Citizens

I could be wrong so you should check, but I'm pretty sure my accountant told me several years ago that you are not required to issue a 1099 for a non-US citizen.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
