Contributions to Missionaries

I know that the IRS says that you cannot give to individuals and be deductible by the donor - does this apply to missionaries? Our church gives to specific Global Partner missionaries and several others. When tithe envelopes show a missionaries name, is this tax deductible to the donor? The church then send out funds at the end of the month to the organization that the missionary is under, but lists the amounts collected for each missionary.

Deductible Contributions to Missionaries
by: Vickey

The contributions would be tax deductible as long the church exercises full administrative control over the donated funds. From the information you have provided, it sounds like that would be the case.

See the example written by the MinistryCPA on Designated Gift to a Missionary that I added to this page: https://www.freechurchaccounting.com/contributions-to-an-individual.html.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
