Too much work for the Treasurer

by Bert Francis

I serve as the Treasurer at my church and we currently manage the funds for all the auxiliaries of the church(Men’s Group, Women’s Group, Sunday School, Youth,Deacons,Prayer Band, Ushers, Choir).

It is such a pain.

The groups do no cross checking of their own and as such always believe their balance should be bigger than it is.

There is immense overhead dealing with their accounts and their attitudes - especially at year end. I have been pushing for them to handle their own accounting – however they choose to do it.

sub groups
by: Sandra

I attended an IRS Workshop and they require the "parent" group to have oversite of the "sub groups".... so while the bible study may have a budgeted amount from the church the church is responsible for insuring they are following the church policies...(church will lose it's tax exempt status if sub group is not following the rules)...
Does your church give the sub group a budget?
If your church allows them their own account they will have to provide the church with the "proof" they are following policies. They will need to give monthly reports. Maintain the bank statements, reconcile and have yearly audits. (I'm sure there is more, but you get the idea)
You do not want them to cause the church to lose its tax exempt status, make sure you have a policy for them to follow if your church gives approval of their own account.
Prayers!
