Separation of duties

Should the same person sign checks and count the money?

Answer

Not if you can help it. Sometimes you have no choice while your church is growing.
But as a rule, the person signing checks should not be the same person who counts the money. Also, you should not have just one person counting the offering.

See this page for more on separation of duties.

Hope this helps,

Signing Checks

In addition to having at least two people count the money and prepare the bank deposits, we also require two signatures on every check that is written on the church's bank account.
