To employ a church secretary one sets this up in the books of the church in a similar way that one sets up the minister as an employee. You will need to have she/he to fill out a W-4 form for withholding tax information for federal and state income taxes. Set up a file with their employment application and W-4 information in it. That's a thumbnail sketch of how it begins.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.
