How do clergy voluntary retirement payroll deductions and matching contribution by the church impact W-2s?

by Mr. B
(Michigan)

I understand W-2 line 1 wages exclude voluntary retirement deductions, but does the church matching contribution go unreported on the W-2 since it is sent directly to the retirement provider and won't be touched by the pastor until it's cashed in?

Please advise.

A good software should have that worked into the setup where you choose which options each item affects.

There is an IRS publication that we link to in IconCMO for extra information that may help you understand what goes where in regard to the W-2:

Another good resource is checking with the benefits company that is providing those benefits. They should know where those deductions and benefits go on the W-2, or if they go on the W-2 data ll.
