handling love offerings for pastors

How should you handle a love offering picked up for your pastor. Should you give it to him then and there, or should you bring the money in the church office first then give it to him?

all money recieved through the church should be on the books, never give cash to anyone out of the offerings.
Love offerings to pastors are included as income on their W-2 box 1.
you can use the site search or look to the left and scroll down to contibutions.
Also be sure the donor knows if it is "earmarked" for pastor (or any individual) it is not a deductable contribution.

If a church member gives a gift (gift card to a restaurant or store) to their pastor directly, and the gift doesn't go through the church, it's not taxable.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
