Gift to traveling Pastor

If our church has a Pastor who is not of our church stop on his way through town, we give that person about $100 for travel expenses. They did not come to our church for any reason other than fellowship. We allow them to speak and at the end of service we slip them a check. It is never a case where the person expects any payment of any kind. Should we be listing this as a taxable event?

Taxable Event
by: Vickey

It would be a taxable event for them :-)

However...you would not have to send anyone a 1099-MISC from the church unless you give an individual $600 or more cumulative in a calendar year.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
