Gift to Deacon

The chairman of deacons served as church leader in the absence of a pastor. At the end of his service, the church voted to give him a financial gift of $3000 in appreciation of his service. Is this taxable income for the deacon?

Answer

Yes...because it was for a service preformed, so it wouldn’t really qualify for a non-taxable love offering. You should have a W-9 on file for him and will need to send him a 1099 at the appropriate time.

Hope this helps,

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
