All Income for Part Time Pastor is Housing Allowance

by Gracie
(Ohio)

All the income for our part time pastor is designated as a housing allowance. What is the best way to report this on a 1099misc? I tried to do a W-2 but it would not let me because there was no income in box 1.

All Income for Part Time Pastor is Housing Allowance

I have the same situation with a Retired Pastor who we pay to be a Seniors Calling Pastor.

I simply put $1 as income and the rest of his pay as Housing in the appropriate box.

IRS warning...Make sure you are not over stating the housing allowance, although it is up to the Pastor to claim the correct amount the Church must be able to prove how they came up with the amount.

No place for Housing Allowance on 1099
by: Vickey

There is no place on a 1099 for the qualifying housing allowance amount.

Contact support on whatever software you are using to find out how to leave the appropriate boxes blank and/or insert zeros on the minister's W-2.

pastor 1099 vs W2

What is the appropriate box on the 1099-Misc. to report a ministers housing allowance.
If you pay your pastor you should be issuing a W2 as they would be concidered an employee. Housing allowance would then be reported in box 14.
You can find out more by looking to your left and scrolling down to Clergy/Minister.

pastor 1099 vs W2

Very good answer, first you should be using a W2 to report your Pastor's income as he is a Dual Status Employee.

The payroll system I have been using for a number a years places the Housing Allowance in Box #14 labeled as Clergy HW then the amount.

Would encourage you to look thru the information in Clergy/Minister or a source like Worth or Hammer to get information on reporting your Pastor's Income to reduce exposure to audits of the Pastor or your Church.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
