Worship Leader

We pay a worship leader $50 a week. Would we give her a 1099 or a W2?

Worship Leaders are Considered Employees Most of the Time
by: Vickey

Most likely a W-2 as most worship leaders fall under the IRS's definition of an employee.

They use the church's equipment, work hours the church sets, etc.

The issue will arise that you didn't withhold and match FICA taxes.

Please consult a knowledgeable tax professional on how to proceed.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
