We are no-profit organization

"Are there any free accounting software for non-profit groups? Where would I find these?" First, any organization that produces accounting software will not be giving it away free. If there is such a company, I would be very suspicious of the quality of the software. The value of something free is exactly what you pay for it - zero. A non profit organization with all the accounting standards that need to be followed as well as certain IRS regulations requires not cutting corners in obtaining accounting software. The main reason organizations, profit and non profit fail and shut down is due to poor bookkeeping practice and record keeping. Starting with inadequate accounting software would be step toward eventual problems and failure. If your organization is small enough and you have an experienced accountant to provide support, you might could start in Excel but should plan to move to QuickBooks, Peachtree or other name brand software as soon as possible.

Open Source Options
by: K L McGiverin-Bohan

I might suggest looking for an Open Source option. They are generally free and can be higher quality than anything proprietary. For example, Firefox is an open source web browser. The computing experts that put their heads together to develop these products are passionate about their work and the programs they create.

As for financial software, you might consider SQL-Ledger or GNUcash. If you contact these organizations, their volunteers are going to be more than happy to talk to you about the best product to suit your needs.

More information about affordable Open Source Software solution for nonprofits can be found in a TechSoup article http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/software/page5683.cfm

If you are wondering more about Open Source, Wikipedia has a pretty great entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_and_open_source_software

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
