Software for churches with operating budgets between $1 million and $2 million

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I am researching new financial and membership software for my church.

I thought QB might be a good fit but you recommend it for churches with operating budgets of $1 million or less.

Do you have any software suggestions for churches with an operating budget of $1.5 million to $2.0 million?

Church software
by: Jeff cpa

I agree that QB runs into limitations for largers churches. I would suggest a product called Intacct. It is in the cloud, flexible, and built to include non profits. It is more expensive than QB, but worth the difference.

Not QBO (QuickBooks Online)
by: Vickey

Thank you, Jeff!

I cannot offer any recommendations for a church that size as I have not set up an accounting system for a church with an operating budget over one million.

I have worked with a church that was going on their 3rd year in QuickBooks Online (QBO) with an operating budget of almost 1 million and they were having some issues with the software.

I don't know if that was an individual file issue, but it made me leery of putting a church of that size into QBO.

The CPA I worked for a couple of years ago had several larger churches in desktop QBDT (QuickBooks Desktop) and had no issues, but I agree with Jeff in that a church of that size needs a more robust accounting system.

You can see what other are saying about church accounting software such as PowerChurch and ChurchWindows by clicking on SOFTWARE at the top of this page and then "Accounting Software". Scroll to the bottom for comments.

Using QuickBooks Desktop for Churches with 1 Million Plus
by: Vickey

Mike, I just spoke with the CPA I used to work for and he stated, "Our biggest client is putting almost $3 million through QBDT. It is plenty robust.

They have a full audit that requires only 2 days on site by the audit team.

Intact is a much more expensive and complicated solution."

I highly recommend using a CPA firm familiar with setting up large churches in QB Desktop such as my former boss: Bill OConnell of Wisdom Over Wealth

You can request a consultation with him thru his site:

or you can contact me and I will put you in touch with him.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
