does a church member have to use a CID # for tithes?

Does a church member have to use a CID# for tithes each week, for tax purposes? (contribution identification number ) Is this a new law? If so when does it go into effect?

Answer

I have not heard anything about it. I do not believe it is a law in the United States.

I know “for right now” a social security number or any other id number for donors is not required. I have heard that that is a real possibility in the future, but not right now.

Using a CID# or not would be up to individual churches and their policies in the US.

Hope this helps,

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
