If a person makes a donation to the church (not a member) and does not designate to which fund the contribution is made, can we put it in any designated fund or should it just go into the general fund.

a general contribution should always go in the general fund.

If it is needed elsewhere then during your council meeting you can vote on using general funds to make payments where needed.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
