Clothing Donations

Our church would like to start a ministry where we collect clothing and give it away to needy families. What things do we need to do in order to cover ourselves IRS wise and any other suggestions from those who have done this or are doing this that would help us.

We've come up with a contributions sheet in case people would like to have a receipt for tax purposes but do we need to do anything else to show we are giving the clothes away instead of selling them?

By the way, I simply love this site!

Read IRS pub 1771 and 526 to help.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
