Can a church which is a 501 3 c organization provide a severance package for the minister from the proceeds of selling their building and property?

Church Closing Concerns
by: Anonymous in NC

Keep in mind that I'm not a legal counselor, but what could be wrong with this especially if there is no violation of higher church administration? As long as the closing church's administrative board decides in a fair manor (democratically) on this package for the minister and the tax documents (since the church is closing)would need to be submitted to the appropriate government offices at the time the package is paid, then I see no problem. Also, if this were my church closing, I would want all full-time employees of the church to be treated equitably based on time-served at the church.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
