How much should the pastor/priest be paid in a 300 of less member church. Is there a percentage guideline?

Percentage pay for pastor???
by: Lewis in NC

The church exists as a nonprofit agency and has a "mission to share the Gospel and do good in the communities".

It is probably not a good idea to have a set percentage of church revenue as pastor compensation.

The question of how much to pay the pastor should be a negotiated amount between the church and the pastor, and the consequential percentage is going to be most likely relevant to the life and growth of the church.

As you negotiate the compensation of the pastor keep in mind the housing allowance that is still afforded by our U.S Govt. and use it as an intended enhancement to his/her salary and (in my opinion) not do an additional cash allowance to salary as some churches have started--as the IRC 107 was established to help churches better afford their ministers.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
