Non-Cash Gift for Pastor

Our pastor announced his resignation earlier this month. Our deacon board decided to hire someone to paint a painting of our church as a "farewell gift". What are my options of how to write this off since the church is stuck with a bill?

Staff Gift

I was hoping someone would be able to help you, but it must be a busy time for everyone...so I will try to answer your question.

Not sure what you mean by "write off"? But in regards to accounting, I would assign it to an appropriate expense account such as "Staff Gifts".

As far as the taxability of such a gift, please consult a knowledgeable tax professional for direction on whether or not to include the value of the painting in his final W-2.
