Love Offering during musical performance

I am a member of a musical group considering holding a concert at a local church.

The group is a 501c3 nonprofit.

If the church collects a free will offering for the church (not for us) during the concert, is that ok?

Love Offering for a Church or Nonprofit
by: Vickey

I am assuming that you are inquiring if the love offering can be issued in the name of the nonprofit group?

The answer is yes. The local church would not even have to process and file a 1099 if the offering was $600 or more...

BUT if the nonprofit turned around and paid the musicians...then the nonprofit would have to treat it as taxable wages for those individuals with all of the payroll tax withholding and matching those payments would require.
