interim pastor

We are searching for a pastor. We are thinking about having a preacher that is not licensed or ordained to fill in during this time. Do we cut and match social security for him?

An interim pastor would be a full-time(?)employee of the church. Yes you would withhold taxes and FICA tax and pay the employer's share of FICA.

A full-time employee serving as your pastor -- not a qualified ordained minister--would have to have FICA deductions and employer match.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
