If someone writes a check to the church and designated it as a benevolence gift to a church member, should he received credit for this gift on his contribution report?

No, it is not legal for the Church to pass thru funds nor to give credit for giving

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.
