Can I use my own labor as a housing allowance expense?

by Dave Rutledeg

Is it possible to claim a dollar amount per hour when repairing my home when adding up housing allowance expenses?
Septic Field Replaced
Windows Replaced
Deck Replaced

I declared $24,000 this past year as my housing allowance but because I did a great deal of the labor I only have $20,423k in receipts.

Thanks,
Dave

Approved housing allowances are through a church's governing council or committee--not just an amount you decide upon. Also, I cannot claim labor donated to my church as a volunteer, so I think you cannot claim your own labor toward a housing allowance expense. If you read a source to the contrary, please report back to this website.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
