Can cash love gifts be given directly to a visiting missionary?

When visiting missionaries speak at our church, we always put an offering tray out for voluntary love gifts. Usually, the love gift is entirely cash. Can this cash be given directly to the visiting missionary without going through the church books?

Love Offerings to Missionaries
by: MarcusNTexas

Our church collects the cash or checks (made payable to the church) and then I write a check to the Missionary for the full amount of the love offering. Technically, if the love offering is for speaking, the Missionary is providing a service and if the total he/she received for any calendar year is $600 or more we send the Missionary a 1099-MISC at the end of the year.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
