Buying Item off Craigslist for Church (Paying Cash, No Receipt)

by Joel Miller

My church is in need of a new drum set. We're a small church and don't have much of a budget for one. We would like to buy one off of Craigslist, but we won't be able to get a receipt. Is there a way to deal with this? Can we write our own bill of sale or something?

Thank you!

Check Request
by: Bill OConnell

Church life frequently needs to spend funds for things like honorariums, or miscellaneous purchases like this one. I suggest your church develop a check request form to document the purpose and approvals of this purchase.

In this case, he payee would be the seller, and the request would be signed by one or more approvers. I also suggest the seller provide a simple bill of sale that could be later attached to the check request. A handwritten note like "Received from (name of church), $100 for a set of drums."

Yes, you could do a memo or try printing the listing of the drums from Craigslist
