Saving checks or just the receipts?

by Laura Crocker

When we purchase items with a church check from Wal-Mart, they run the check through their system and I sign the electronic pad. I am given the receipt and check back. The check has electronic printing on it. Do I keep this check and file it with the receipt or do I shred it. The amount will show up as a debit on our bank statement. But not as copy of the check. Thank you.

Document the transaction with the complete supporting papers--put the receipt and the returned paper check together in the file.

If you want to DIY your payroll, I highly recommend you look at using Gusto! It is very user friendly and their support is awesome! Plus they know how to set up and maintain payrolls for churches and nonprofit organizations.

Note: I am a "partner" of Gusto, but as I have told you before ... I never recommend anything that we or our clients have not tried and love =)
