Music Minister

We have a new person in our music ministry. He is a volunteer, being that our church cannot afford to pay him. Our Pastor has suggested we (members)give the person an appreciation donation thru the year. If the members make their checks to the church & specify the Music Ministry will this person have to have a W-2 @ end of year? If checks are made out or cash given directly to person it's his discretion?

Thanks

If donations are given directly to the musician, he is responsible for handling his gifts and it would be difficult for the church to manage the donations. However, if the donations are done through the church, any money (over $600) they received for his benefit will have to be reported to IRS.

W2 or 1099?

If the music minister is on the church payroll, then the amount should be included in his W2. If not, and the total amount for the year is $600 or more, a 1099 should be issued.

In this case, because the music minister is a volunteer (and not an employee), the church should issue a 1099 if the total amount for the year is $600 or more.

If the person is paid thru the Church then a W2 should be issued. If given directly person to person then it is up to the Music Minister to handle on his own.
